A reddened heel needs little more than the basic pack above. A larger or deeper sacral ulcer often needs an advanced dressing — foam, hydrocolloid, silver or alginate — and those sit at the top of the range. All billed at supplier cost and only when used, so the figure tracks the wound rather than a package.

What happens during the visit

  • The nurse assesses the wound — size, depth, the surrounding skin and any signs of infection.
  • The wound is cleaned and an appropriate dressing applied.
  • Other pressure points are checked: heels, sacrum, hips, elbows, the back of the head.
  • The family or helper is shown repositioning, offloading and skin-check routines.
  • Equipment that would help — an alternating pressure mattress, cushions, heel offloaders — is discussed.
  • A written summary with the wound measurements goes to the patient's doctor so progress can be tracked.

Who needs this

Families caring for someone who spends most of the day in bed or a chair — after a stroke, with advanced dementia, or during a long recovery — and who has developed a pressure area, or is at risk of one. Also people discharged from hospital with a pressure ulcer already being dressed.

How often: Commonly two or three visits a week at first, easing as the wound improves. The nurse reviews the schedule at each visit.

When to call a doctor

  • Spreading redness, heat or swelling around the wound, or a foul smell
  • Black or leathery tissue over the wound
  • Fever, chills, drowsiness or new confusion — a pressure ulcer can become a serious infection
  • The wound is deep enough to see bone, tendon or muscle
  • Sudden increase in pain, or the wound bleeding freely

Do you train the helper?
Yes, and it is the part that makes the most difference. Repositioning, offloading heels and daily skin checks happen between visits, not during them. Caregiver training is also available as a separate session.
Do we need a special mattress?
Often it helps a great deal. The nurse will tell you what would suit and leave the decision to you — we do not require you to buy anything through us.
