What happens during the visit
- The nurse checks the insertion site for any redness or swelling.
- The dressing is changed using a sterile technique.
- The line is flushed to keep it patent.
- Any concerns are documented and flagged.
- A written visit summary is left for the patient's own doctor.
Who needs this
People discharged home with a PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) — for example for a course of IV antibiotics or other IV treatment.
How often: PICC dressings are usually changed weekly, with flushing per the treatment plan.
